The Basics of Cross Merchandising [Video]

Sales and cross merchandising are like peanut butter and jelly. In fact, cross merchandising is the reason your peanut butter is sitting next to different flavors and brands of jelly on your grocery store shelves.

What Is Cross Merchandising?

The popular retail strategy is defined as the practice of placing complementary goods next to one another to increase sales. The thought behind the process is that by arranging products consumers can perceive a relationship between items, therefore making them more likely to be persuaded to buy them together.

Who Can Benefit From Cross Merchandising?

Cross merchandising is found in all sorts of retail outlets, whether it be cosmetic, grocery, or clothing stores. Creating displays for customers through cross merchandising gives customers what they came in for, but also offers related products that they may want to go with it.

This might be a local boutique displaying a cocktail dress then placing necklaces and earrings around it, or your favorite makeup brand putting lip liner near the lipstick you came in for. The way managers merchandise products correlates to the success of sales. Displays should be engaging, clean, and eye-catching.
